Know Your Skin

What you put on your skin
matters.

The average person applies 9 personal care products daily — exposing their skin to over 100 chemical ingredients before breakfast. Most have never been tested for long-term safety. This is everything you need to know to make better choices — starting today.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

Common ingredients that don't belong on your skin.

Parabens

Synthetic preservatives (methylparaben, propylparaben) linked to hormone disruption. Common in lotions, shampoos, conditioners marketed to Black consumers.

Synthetic Fragrance

A single “fragrance” can contain 50–100 undisclosed chemicals. The #1 skin irritant. Linked to respiratory issues and contact dermatitis.

Sulfates (sls/sles)

Harsh foaming agents that strip the skin’s natural oil barrier — especially damaging for melanin-rich skin prone to dryness.

Hydroquinone

A skin-lightening agent marketed heavily to Black and Brown women. Linked to a skin condition called ochronosis and classified as potentially carcinogenic.

Phthalates

Plasticisers used to make fragrance last longer. Found in higher concentrations in products marketed to Black consumers. Endocrine disruptors.

Phthalates

Preservatives (DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15) that slowly release formaldehyde into products. Found in many hair relaxers and keratin treatments.
